Linneys has unveiled what it is fair to say is a unique creation: the Argyle Pink Quokka.
This limited-edition piece combines the rarity of Argyle pink diamonds with the iconic quokka, a marsupial native to Western Australia.
Limited to just three pieces and priced at an eye-watering $500,000 each, the Argyle Pink Quokka is part of the Icon Partner Program initiated by Rio Tinto, the former operator of the Argyle diamond mine.
Design and Features
The Argyle Pink Quokka consists of two parts: a quokka statue and a detachable leaf pendant. Crafted from 18-karat yellow and rose gold, the quokka is adorned with 3.39 carats of Argyle pink diamonds, along with 10.96 carats of white and Argyle champagne diamonds. The design is further enhanced by 0.40 carats of pavé-set pink diamonds embellishing the quokka’s ears, highlighting Linneys’ meticulous craftsmanship.
The leaf pendant held by the quokka can be removed and worn as a necklace. It features 2.99 carats of Argyle pink diamonds and is suspended from an 18-karat rose gold chain with 0.62 carats of bezel-set white diamonds. This dual-purpose design allows the piece to function both as a decorative object and wearable jewellery, catering to collectors and jewellery enthusiasts alike.
Preserving the Legacy of Argyle Pink Diamonds
The closure of the Argyle diamond mine in 2020 marked the end of an era for the global diamond market. As the world’s primary source of pink diamonds, Argyle’s output was highly sought after, with pink diamonds making up less than 0.1% of its production. The rarity of these diamonds has increased significantly since the mine’s closure, elevating the value of pieces like the Argyle Pink Quokka.
Patrick Coppens, General Manager of Sales and Marketing at Rio Tinto Diamonds, praised Linneys’ role in preserving the heritage of these rare gems: “As one of the very first luxury jewellers entrusted with Argyle Pink Diamonds, Linneys was the ideal partner for this one-of-a-kind collectible. The Argyle Pink Quokka is a brilliant display of craftsmanship while celebrating the wonderful art of nature in all forms.”
Symbolism and Cultural Significance
Beyond its luxurious appeal, the Argyle Pink Quokka carries cultural significance by honouring two Western Australian icons. The quokka, known as the “world’s happiest animal,” is a symbol of the region’s unique wildlife. The use of Argyle pink diamonds, meanwhile, pays tribute to one of Australia’s most significant natural resources.
“Linneys is thrilled to unveil the Argyle Pink Quokka, a piece that pays homage to two of Western Australia’s rarest and most cherished icons—the quokka, with its endearing charm, and Argyle Pink Diamonds, renowned as the rarest diamonds in the world,” said Justin Linney, Creative Director at Linneys. He added that the piece is expected to attract collectors of fine art, diamond enthusiasts, and those with a special connection to Australia.
The Argyle Pink Quokka is currently available for purchase through the Linneys website.
