Sydney-based jewellery designer Cindy Xu was awarded the “Best Gemstone” title at the 2024 Milano Jewelry Week for her opal brooch, Whirlpool Stingray.
Known for her focus on wildlife themes, Xu’s work was prominently featured at the Artistar Jewelry Exhibition held during Milano Jewelry Week.
Recognition for Craftsmanship in Opal Jewellery
Made with Australian black opal, mother of pearl, and titanium, the Whirlpool Stingray brooch brooch’s design centres on a stingray within a wave motif, emphasising movement and natural elements.

Following her win, Cindy commented, “I’m surprised and excited to be recognized on such an international stage, it is an honour… Each stone’s vibrant patterns possess a unique story waiting to be told, and I want to transform them into exquisite jewellery that narrates tales of nature and wildlife preservation.”
Wildlife Preservation Themes at Artistar Jewelry Exhibition
The Artistar Jewelry Exhibition at Palazzo Bovara in Milan included four pieces from Xu’s Eternal Wildlife Collection: Whirlpool Stingray, Golden Scarab, Overjoy Magpie, and Guardians. Each piece underscores opal’s natural allure and reflects themes of wildlife preservation, demonstrating Xu’s approach of blending fine jewellery with environmental themes.
Xu’s Eternal Wildlife Collection integrates wildlife imagery and opal gemstones, contributing to the trend of using jewellery to convey messages on environmental issues. By doing so, Xu highlights a unique intersection between fine jewellery and advocacy.
Expanding Global Presence
In addition to Milano Jewelry Week, Cindy Xu has exhibited at prominent international jewellery events, including the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, Shanghai Jewellery Show, and Tucson Gem and Jewellery Fair. Her works will also be included in the Artistar Jewels exhibition book, enhancing her visibility within the jewellery industry.
