Musson Opens Chatswood Chase Flagship, Marking Return to Sydney’s North Shore

Australian jewellery house Musson has opened a new flagship boutique at Chatswood Chase in Sydney, re-establishing its presence in the North Shore retail precinct where it first operated in 1983.

The 300 square metre, two-level store forms part of the brand’s broader retail development strategy, following the launch of its Grand Boutique and Workshop at the Queen Victoria Building in 2024.

    Store Concept and Layout

The Chatswood Chase flagship has been designed as a contemporary retail environment, contrasting with the heritage-led design of the Queen Victoria Building location.

The ground floor operates as an open, gallery-style space where core collections are displayed, with lighting and materials selected to support product visibility.

The upper level has been configured as a more private, residential-style setting used for consultations and bespoke commissions, reflecting an ongoing focus on high-value, custom jewellery. Engagement rings within the brand’s offering are positioned in the five- and six-figure range.

    Design and Materials

The boutique was developed in collaboration with Emilie Delalande of Studio Etic. The interior incorporates a restrained material palette, layered textures and hand-finished metals, with an emphasis on keeping attention on the jewellery.

A central feature is a staircase connecting the two levels, finished in bronze-toned reflective paint and marmorino plaster. Transparent elements and softer finishes are used throughout to maintain visual continuity between spaces while differentiating the functions of each floor.

    Brand Development and Positioning

The opening forms part of a period of expansion for Musson, with the Chatswood Chase store positioned as a contemporary counterpart to its Queen Victoria Building location. Together, the two sites represent different retail formats within the same market, balancing heritage-led presentation with a more modern store concept.

Founded in 1972 by Robert and Kerry Musson, the business remains family-owned and is now led by co-CEOs Olivar and Catherine Musson. The company is recognised for its work with rare diamonds, including the ‘Argyle Octavia’, sourced from the Argyle Diamond Mine, and holds status as an Argyle Pink Diamond Select Atelier.

Commenting on the opening, Olivar Musson said: “We are proud to be returning home to the North Shore, where the Musson story first began. This flagship represents not only our heritage, but our future with a space that reflects a sophisticated new chapter for the brand.”

    Retail Context

Chatswood Chase has undergone redevelopment in recent years, with a focus on expanding its premium retail offering. Musson’s return places it alongside a mix of luxury and mainstream brands within the centre.

For jewellers, the dual-store strategy in Sydney reflects an approach that differentiates retail environments by location and customer intent. The inclusion of dedicated spaces for bespoke services aligns with continued demand for personalised, high-value pieces, while gallery-style layouts support self-directed browsing.

The investment in larger-format, design-led stores also indicates the continued role of physical retail in presenting high-value jewellery, particularly where consultation and customisation are central to the sales process.
