Michael Hill International has sadly announced the sudden passing of its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Daniel Bracken, following an adverse reaction to medical treatment for an underlying condition. He was 57 years old.
A Significant Loss for Michael Hill and the Retail Industry
Bracken’s passing has deeply affected the Michael Hill team and the wider retail community. In a statement, the company expressed its condolences to his family and friends.
“On behalf of the board, we thank Daniel for his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Michael Hill Group and our people over the past seven years,” the company said.
Bracken was recognised for his strategic leadership and contributions to the business.
Extensive Experience in Retail
Born in London, Bracken had a long career in retail, holding senior positions at several well-known brands. Before joining Michael Hill in 2018, he was Chief Merchandise and Customer Officer, and later Deputy CEO of Myer.
Prior to that, he spent over 15 years at Burberry London, where he played a role in the company’s international growth. He also served as CEO of Apparel Group, overseeing brands such as Sportscraft, Saba, Willow, and JAG.
Bracken’s Tenure at Michael Hill
Bracken’s passing comes shortly after he presented Michael Hill’s interim financial results, which reported a 9% increase in statutory net profit after tax to AUD 10.7 million. The company noted that despite economic challenges, growth in Australia and Canada, along with its omni-channel strategy, had contributed to the results.
During his leadership, Michael Hill introduced initiatives including the Pendant Bar concept and the expansion of its lab-grown diamond collection. The company also opened a second global flagship store in Melbourne and updated several store locations to align with its current brand strategy.
Leadership Transition
Michael Hill has not yet announced a successor. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Lowe stated that the board will confirm interim leadership arrangements in due course.
Founded in 1979 by Sir Michael Hill, the company now operates around 300 stores across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, employing more than 2,800 people.
Bracken’s passing is a significant loss for the business and the wider retail sector and we extend our condolences to his friends and family.
