On 24 October 2023, the Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA) announced a significant change to its Board, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter. Jo Tory, who has been an influential figure in the JAA, has officially resigned from her position on the Board. Tory’s journey with the JAA began in February 2017, culminating in her role as President from January 2019 to November 2021.
Her resignation is attributed to the growth of personal and business obligations. Reflecting on her tenure, Tory shared, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a JAA Board Director and President. It has been a time of learning and sharing, of friendships and thoughtful process.”
JAA President Joshua Sharp expressed the association’s gratitude, stating, “On behalf of the JAA, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution made to the Association by Jo and thank her for her leadership and commitment to the JAA over the last 6 years as a Board Director and President. Jo has been an integral part of the JAA, particularly through the pandemic. We wish Jo all the best for the future.”
Welcoming Mary Storch to the Board
In the wake of Tory’s departure, the JAA welcomed a new face to its Board: Mary Storch, a seasoned professional in the jewellery industry. Storch’s passion for the field began over 40 years ago, inspired by familial tales of discovering precious metals and her subsequent studies in silversmithing and jewellery manufacturing under the guidance of Ernst Pfenninger.
Despite early challenges in securing an apprenticeship during a time when female jewellers were a rarity, Storch forged a noteworthy career, including a significant role in diamond grading and sales, executive leadership at Storch & Co., and guest lecturing for the Gemmological Association of Australia (GAA). She also served as a judge for the prestigious De Beers national jewellery design competition.
After a hiatus from the industry beginning in 2002 for personal reasons, Storch has remained connected with various industry associates, maintaining her keen interest in the field.
Regarding her appointment, Sharp commented, “Myself and my fellow directors are pleased to welcome Mary to the JAA Board. Mary’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the jewellery industry is significant and her willingness to give back to the jewellery industry through her position on the JAA Board is commendable. The directors and myself warmly welcome Mary. I look forward to working with her.”
