A 4.74-carat D-colour, internally flawless diamond led a Bonhams Fine Jewellery auction in Sydney on 25 August, alongside coloured diamonds, high-carat-weight bracelets and signed pieces from Cartier, Bulgari and Van Cleef & Arpels.
Near-Five-Carat Diamond Carries Top Estimate
The unmounted round brilliant-cut diamond was offered with an estimate of AUD 140,000 to AUD 180,000 (£68,000 to £88,000).
A GIA report accompanying the stone graded it D colour and internally flawless. Although its weight was below the five-carat threshold, its combination of size, colour and clarity gave it the highest estimate among the auction’s more than 130 lots.
The auction has concluded, although Bonhams had not published a result for the diamond at the time of writing.
Yellow Diamond and Bracelets Among Leading Lots
Another principal lot was a ring set with a 4.07-carat cushion-shaped fancy intense yellow diamond of VVS1 clarity. Flanked by trilliant-cut diamonds, it carried an estimate of AUD 65,000 to AUD 85,000.
Bonhams also offered two bracelets containing more than 24 carats of diamonds each. One comprised 35 emerald-cut diamonds totalling 24.61 carats, mounted in white gold, and was estimated at AUD 45,000 to AUD 65,000. The other featured 27 round brilliant-cut diamonds weighing a combined 24.31 carats and carried an estimate of AUD 40,000 to AUD 60,000.
Signed Jewellery Represented
Signed pieces included a Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace featuring 10 quatrefoil motifs separated by sections of chain. Its brilliant-cut diamonds weighed approximately four carats in total and the necklace was estimated at AUD 30,000 to AUD 50,000.
Jewellery by Cartier and Bulgari also appeared in the sale. The inclusion of these pieces alongside loose stones and unsigned diamond jewellery provided buyers with a range of categories at different price points.
